We know, it’s still January, but this new nail gadget has us extra excited for lazy summer beach days free from sunburns. Anyone that has pale skin knows this struggle all too well.
One of the trickiest parts about frolicking in the sunshine is knowing when exactly you should reapply sunscreen. Before you know it, you’ve got an uncomfortable sunburn, and you start lathering on the aloe vera.
Unfortunately, if your skin is already burnt, it’s a little too late — the sun damage has been done. Excessive exposure to the sun without UV proactive sunscreen can lead to early wrinkles, skin discoloration, and, in some cases, even skin cancer.
But thanks to the experts at L’Oréal, this can be a thing of the past. They’ve created a wearable sensor called the “UV Sense” that tracks UVA and UVB exposure levels, as well as syncs to an app in real time, so you’ll never forget to reapply sunscreen again.
The “UV Sense” is cute but discreet, too — it’s a tiny electronic sensor you can stick on your thumbnail.
“We set out to create something that blends problem-solving technology with human-centered design to reach even more consumers who require additional information about their UV exposure,” Guive Balooch, Global Vice President of L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator, said in a press release.
The device can be worn for up to two weeks (almost as long as a gel manicure) and is only 9 millimeters in diameter, so it fits perfectly on your nail. What’s even better is that it’s battery-free and compatible with both iPhone and Android, so you’ll get alerts when it’s time to reapply sunscreen as well as updates on your sun exposure. The creators thought of everything, pretty much.
No word yet on the price (here’s hoping this awesome gadget doesn’t break the bank), but it’s set to launch in the U.S. this summer. You can expect to see it worldwide in 2019.
